Excellence in Natural Masonry

Paynter Residence (King, WI)

Logs and stone have enjoyed centuries of synonymous construction for homes and cabins. Among other qualities, it is the timeless enduring beauty of real stone, and strength of heavy timber that define such a harmonious combination. The owners of this custom residence, designed by Strongwood Log & Timber Homes, received exactly that. Architect, Thad Marcom, President of Strongwood, utilized both structural frame and hybrid system elements with accents.

All joinery was traditional wood-pegged mortise and tenon. Natural materials were mixed in all areas. Exterior features include both hand-split cedar and natural bark shingles for siding, along with an extensive wainscot of natural thin veneer stone from Natural Stone Veneers International, Inc (NSVI) provided by County Materials Corporation. The owners toured dealer showrooms and NSVI facilities before choosing what has become an immensely popular blend of thin veneer products, “Palmer” – 70% from their Tuscan Collection, and “Aspen” – 30% from their Fieldstone Collection. The sandstone’s texture and natural hues of salmon, beige and taupe are inviting and warm, helping to take any chill out of the air.

The mason, Jim Degen from Degen’s Masonry, maintained those same proportions in each architectural element that used stone, such as the near dozen trapezoidal columns and a colossal two-story outdoor fireplace. The fireplace is a magnificent focal point in an expansive, covered entertainment area where everyone likes to congregate during the cool Wisconsin evenings. The same hybrid design approach continues to the interior, with timber-frame construction and a cozy floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace in the corner.

Judges' Comments

  • Beautiful craftsmanship throughout. One can tell that the masons were highly skilled. Excellent use of materials and detailing.
  • The beams with stone to the compound corner and the use of the space under the porch makes the details hard to miss. A touch of color around the windows really sets this place off. Would have loved to see the fireplace be an all masonry one with this country home.
  • The outside area with the fireplace is an entertainer’s delight.
  • Great use of traditional materials in a traditional setting to create a unique project.
  • Beautiful home! Outdoor area ties well with interior and provides for the ultimate gathering place for friends and family. The masonry design flows naturally from all angles and incorporates wooden timber to soften the boldness of the stone. The rustic entry door under the stairs is a perfect choice.
