First Place Residential Masonry Application

Herro Franke Residence

This power couple wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of Chicago on the weekends after a week of dealing with stress at the board of trade.

The couple’s request was for a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home with a contemporary feel and clean lines.  The home is situated on a lake in the suburbs   of Milwaukee with tall mature trees setting the stage for a beautiful oasis.

The couple love to host parties and socialize with not only friends, but business partners.  Most of their guests come from the Windy City, so they decided to build several guest quarters for overnight visits.  An outdoor fireplace and outdoor kitchen was blended seamlessly into the exterior of the house using the same material.

The exterior materials:  Landmark Veneer from Halquist Stone in heights that range from 1 ½” to 6 ½” with random lengths.  Custom Fond du Lac strip paving was used throughout the grounds for a walking paths and undercover parking.  All stones were selected for their beauty and durability in a cold climate.

We believe this collaboration suits the practical needs of this couple who commissioned it resulting in a beautiful building which sits comfortably in it surroundings and only gets better with age.

Judges Comments:

  • Very nice modern project yet has warmth and homelike feel for a residence. The integration of massing of the structure into the site and its context, along with use of timeless materials such as masonry and wood siding has created a timeless piece.
  • Project looks like is blends perfectly into the surrounds and the soft wood is a nice compliment to the stone.
  • This is a great integration of site design and building design. The retaining walls are obviously a natural extension of the building. The overall design is not especially unique or inspirational, but the detailing is excellent.
  • The use of the stone veneer helps to anchor the building to the sloping site well, which is a good choice for the base of this structure. The proportions work well.
